4G wireless service should be available later this year courtesy of Verizon, according to one of the company's executives. And for businesses, that could have some important ramifications as they'll be able to offer better customer service and perhaps increase the odds of their representatives making sales.
Maybe you've encountered a door-to-door salesperson - or even a professional who's come over by appointment - who can only produce some crumpled brochures when asked for a few examples of his or her company's work.
Or maybe, when trying to work out a technical problem or billing issue, you've seen one of these individuals resort to calling the home office, getting put on hold, and then having to talk through the whole situation with someone on the other end.
These sorts of things don't make good impressions on potential customers. But with 4G wireless service rolling out, businesses should find it easier to equip a lot of their employees with tablets and laptops. Then all sorts of virtual configurators and options menus can be put right in people's hands (not that it hurts to have brochures and an operator on standby).
So here's the skinny on the arrival of 4G: as reported by Marguerite Reardon, Verizon CTO Dick Lynch said at the Mobile World Congress that "Verizon Wireless is in the final testing phase, or 'Phase 4,' of its LTE technology. Within 60 days he said he expects testing to be completed in Boston and Seattle. After those trials are complete, Verizon will be ready to announce commercial deployments."
All in all, about 25 or 30 U.S. markets should see this tech come their way in 2010. Reardon also wrote, "Initially, Verizon Wireless will offer USB air cards that access LTE for its laptop customers. Cell phones and other mobile devices with embedded LTE will be introduced later."
CTOs may want to familiarize themselves with portable computing devices and wireless solutions in advanceas this all starts to roll out. The introduction of 4G is definitely something that will allow companies to appear more professional and responsive under certain circumstances.
