Just a week after AOL debuted the full release of its AIM Triton instant messaging client, the executive who led the IM division has announced his departure from the company.
Too bad Chamath Palihapitiya couldn't have had someone fix Expressions in Triton to allow users to upload a buddy icon from a PC before putting in his 30 day's notice with the online services provider. The Wall Street Journal reported on Palihapitiya's resignation, and noted he will enter the world of venture capital.
In January, Palihapitiya takes his expertise to Mayfield Fund, which occupies a space among the multitude of venture capital firms on Silicon Valley's legendary Sand Hill Road. That expertise should help Mayfield make better decisions on investing in tech startup companies.
Palihapitiya helped recreate AIM and infused it with hooks to AOL Music and other ad-supported content, the report said. Over the past year, AIM has grown in the number of users and AOL saw its ad revenue jump threefold.
Mayfield Managing Director Raj Kapoor said in the article "Palihapitiya's business expertise and his youth will help Mayfield better understand the tastes of young people, who are prime customers for Internet and mobile services."
